[ That's quite a big assumption from Grapes. It's good that Caelus isn't aware of such thoughts… It would've hurt him. There are important reasons why Caelus prefers to be called by his name. It's not that he wants to put himself in danger or anything of that nature. Besides, he's not someone who is looking to be saved. He's someone who saves others, too.
That's how he's lived until now, and he's still going strong. Aiding and protecting others aside, he's still on a constant journey for himself as well, and he won't allow himself to fall here. He's a Nameless, a Trailblazer, and there is still so much that he has to go through before he can find the answers he's looking for. Continuing to meet new faces, encountering new experiences, and seeing new planets again. This Manhattan is only one stop of many. ]
Superior?
[ Between Saheon and Choi, the one who gives a more "senpai" vibe is… Man, does this even need thinking about? Sorry, Saheon. ]
… Agent Choi? Hyung calls me by my name all the time, and so does everyone else here. I'm sure it's fine.
[ Okay, he does have some other weird nicknames given to him as well, but those are out of affection rather than formality. It's because they're friends that those people do it. Anyway, Caelus observes that the spores inside have thinned out, but it seems tricky to entirely open the door if anything in there has collapsed. ]
If the door's jammed, let's just go through the window.
[ He points to the one right beside them, then approaches it first to assess the state of the frame and to peek inside at the same time. ]
[ one hand comes to his frames to push them up, and agent grapes nods his head only to stand up properly. he's sure they could have went through that way, but it's best to move only because of the request, and the agent will refer to this entrance later. to make it easier, once inside, he'll push it out of the way. tilting his head, black locks fall in front of his face as he moves to the suggested window. ]
You... know him? Yes, that's my superior... I'll check in with him about it...
[ which doesn't mean he'll actually say the young man's name at all, agent grapes is far too worried when it comes to that. he knows how annoying agent choi can be, how persistent he needs to be in order to get what he wants, and it's more so discussing if it's even worth it to say the names of these people here.
as he seems to be learning, no one respects the idea, and that's why it's difficult to engage with them on a level that kim soleum is used to. however, if agent choi has also suffered with this, then what else can he do other than give up too? the difficult part of this, this world is still lonely, there's no one who understands or can perceive why soleum does what he do. if only braun were here then he would reassure soleum, tell him that it's difficult now, but the future will be better.
something. ]
I'll help you up...
[ kneeling down, agent grapes laces his hands together to signal caelus to step up onto him. ]
[ A person who is willing to listen is really close by. A person who's been constantly extending his hand since Day One, even to this moment. While Caelus knows the basic reason why Roe Deer gave him a nickname, Roe Deer doesn't know why Caelus and the others insist on their own names. He seems to think that no one takes him seriously or something, yet he also doesn't seem to want to extend the effort to make his feelings known at all. Even when Caelus tries to get closer to him, he only backs away each time.
Should Roe Deer, Grapes, or Soleum give Caelus the chance to talk on a deeper level, then the trailblazer wouldn't even hesitate to hear any of his versions out and understand him better as a whole. But it goes both ways, doesn't it? After all, the others (Caelus included) also have their own reasons for acting the way they do. It's not that they don't think it's worth doing; it's not that they want to endanger themselves or anything like that. For Caelus alone, there are plenty of more important reasons.
Hopefully, a future chance will come for Caelus that he can finally talk to this man on a closer level. He's still waiting patiently!
Anyway, back to their current task… Since Caelus is the smaller one, it makes sense for him to be the one lifted, so he nods in understanding and gently starts climbing onto Grapes. Thankfully, he's very light and agile as well. So within seconds, he has already leaped to grab onto the window frame. He hangs a little as he adjusts his grip, then hoists himself up to sit on the windowsill. ]
Mr. Grapes! The window isn't locked. Lucky us!
[ Easily sliding it open, Caelus enters the apartment, then peeks down at the older man. He extends his hand to him afterward. Come and jump, Grapes. ]
[ pushing caelus up, agent grapes looks up to make sure that he's up there safely through his glasses. blinking slow, the man stands up properly, and dusts off some snow on his pants leg as he brings the weapon to his pocket. walking closer to the wall, he reaches out with one hand to grab the extended one, and he assists by placing the flat of his shoes against the walls surface to help.
once he's pulled up, agent grapes comes through the window right after him, and the wet underside of his shoes hit against the floor. a small squeak of them, he finally releases caelus' hand to bring the same one to his own mouth, only to block out spores.
how many times has a situation like this made itself onto the wiki? a small group of people normally going into a tainted house or apartment for resources, and most if not everything is already damaged by whatever caused destruction of the world. he looks at the variety of colors on the wall, how it's eaten away at the curtains on the floor, and the stains on the floor that shows what has dry rotted.
agent grapes takes one step forward as he squats down, a hand press against the floor and he can feel the lack of stability. ]
The lighter areas... we should be careful, we don't want to fall through.
[ standing up properly (with the hunch of his shoulders), agent grapes looks around the room seeing that they've wandered into what appears to be a nursery room. a cradle barely holding on, the wind-up toy of planets has growth over them that's dangled into vines with a flower at the end. pictures covered in dust along with a small couch.
it's at this, agent grapes can only frown slightly.
on a table nearby, there seems to be a picture book with a name written on the cover: "Our Princess' Second Birthday!"
[ It's morning, so thankfully, the sun is casting enough light within the abandoned space without needing a flashlight. The familiar sight of Sleep's rot is rather potent, so it's likely this entire apartment building is heavily hit as a whole. The earlier jammed door was already a hint of its unfavorable state inside.
There are luckier areas elsewhere that are less damaged, but in unfortunate places like this one… Well, it's naturally more difficult to navigate through them, which makes it harder to find anything useful. But that doesn't mean it's impossible. A hidden gem or two still lies within such areas! Caelus is hoping for the best. Though considering the state of this apocalypse, any resources at all (even partially damaged ones) are always welcome. Some Vessels even tolerate expired food…
When Grapes warns Caelus to be careful, the trailblazer nods obediently. For now, he maintains the same behavior as earlier, following behind the older man. He's mindful of his steps and tries not to make any sudden movements either. ]
What does that say? … Out… Print… Bird… Clay?
[ Sorry. Caelus is an alien. He can't read any of Earth's languages. He has been studying English for a while, though! This is actually a huge improvement compared to when he first started! … But it's still a long work in progress.
He doesn't make a scene, though, especially when he notices the frown on Grape's face. He quiets down a little, wondering if a memory came to the older man after seeing the picture book. ]
[ agent grapes looks at caelus as he comes over to read the text, and what he hears the young man say is completely wrote. he remains quiet, then looks down at the print, before clearing his throat. ]
"Our Princess' Second Birthday", this was the room of a two year old.
[ soleum can read english pretty well unlike some people, it comes from the amount of media he digests from his western cartoons and then clients when he oversees their information. this is one of those times where maybe reading is less than ideal, but from the initial sweep of looking at this place... he would have thought of a newborn.
the concept is upsetting, who wouldn't feel bad for a scenario like this where children too are affected by the outcome. ]
I understand basic survival ethic, but in this place... what should I prioritize?
[ while they're here, he might as well understand what's important when breaking into these buildings. ]
[ The response is soft and lonely. Of course, Caelus feels something as well whenever he enters such tragic places like these, but he's a person of hope. Maybe others would call it naive, but he wants to believe in it regardless. He wants to believe that there are survivors out there somewhere— somewhere they currently can't reach.
After all, they're confined within the limits of Manhattan and haven't seen the state of the other cities. Something promising could be out there. He has said these things to some friends, and they've decided to believe the same.
Will their hopes be crushed one day? Caelus will cross that bridge when he gets there. For now, he will continue to hold onto that hope. Focusing back on Grapes's question, Caelus considers what counts as basic survival… Topics related to food, water, shelter, hygiene kits, first aid, or medicine? Then, he'll talk about something other than those. ]
Do you mean what to watch out for? In my experience, the environment itself is more dangerous than the Hosts. [ There are better visual or audio cues on Hosts. It's hard to miss them. But the environment is a silent assassin. ] Aside from the spores or mold, there's also a risk of asbestos or lead poisoning.
Not just the floor, but the walls or ceiling could also collapse. When you open and close doors, we can't use force on them; we could risk something disintegrating from vibrations. And if you catch a strange scent behind a door, it's better to stay away from it. It might contain trapped gas.
For things to pick up… Honestly, if you feel it might be useful sometime, you should keep it. I'm always collecting the smallest trinkets because I use them in my crafts. I can never get enough of materials to use.
I understand... nothing special, and it's what's expected. Thank you.
[ with a nod of his head, he appreciate the other's words because it hits what's common in an apocalypse setting. he has acknowledged the information that caelus gave him before in the dream, and that still stands true. his explanation in the waking world is extensive, but welcomed nonetheless.
this isn't his first time doing this, but he had wondered for a moment if the odd fungi they come across could be used for something, anything. it seems not, the danger that comes from being near it is pretty clear, and agent grapes is already walking towards the entrance of the room. he pushes the door forward, it barely creaking as the plant growth has made home on the bolts. ]
Um... what trinkets do you use?
[ he emphasis by showing the weapon that caelus gave him, he wonders if he should give it back. if this is something important to him to use for his crafts... the last thing grapes would want to do is cause any trouble for the young man. ]
I can keep an eye out... if you want... for helping me here.
[ actually, this isn't even helping, it's kim soleum having failed his escape attempt and is in this position now. ]
[ Even if Grapes personally feels he doesn't need the assistance, Caelus did accompany him for more than one reason. Aside from helping, he wants to be with him to get to know him better. So, there's always a kind smile whenever the older man turns to talk to him. Eagerness coming from the younger one to hear him out each time. ]
Will you? Hehe… Thank you, too. I'm always accepting donations.
[ Their footsteps creak as they progress forward into the desolate hallway, slowly. This floor of the apartment seems quiet… At least so far. But even if there aren't any visible or audible threats so far, they still can't let their guard down. One could be nearby unexpectedly. ]
I can use most materials. But the ones I commonly need are metals, gems, and plastics. Metals such as copper, steel, or lead are best for crafting bullets.
I crafted that combat knife, by the way. If it breaks or is accidentally lost, I can make you another… Though I can construct other weapons, if you prefer something else.
[ Just considering the scenario if Grapes happens to be a long-ranged fighter. ]
[ looking at his weapon that he definitely won't go out of his way to lose, he takes note of what the other can do. useful, in a way? agent grapes holds the knife tightly in his grasp as they make their way out the room and into the hallway, the creaking floors muted by the age and moss split between the cracks. ]
Um... I don't really use weapons...
[ he usually runs, turns tail and tries to survive or uses his brain to get through whatever issue is before them. even though he's an agent, he's nothing like choi, and while that may make him a liability, that doesn't mean he won't use what's offered to him. ]
But if I think of something, I won't hesitate to ask.
[ there's the sound of something dragging along the floor in another room down the hall, but there's also a flight of stairs they can go down too. rather than see what's making that noise, kim soleum tilts his head towards the stairs and speaks with a relatively low voice. ]
[ It's better to have at least one weapon for self-defense, even if not necessarily for offensive uses. Caelus would've said this, but since Grapes has that knife now, he won't need to worry as much. He trusts the older man can handle himself and will be fine, but he'll still check on him from time to time, to make sure that remains the case.
Upon hearing those strange sounds, though, Caelus entirely halts his feet. Looking at Grape's expression, it seems the man prefers to avoid a fight if they can. The trailblazer agrees. There's no need to exert any risk if it's not needed. ]
Up…
[ He lowers his own voice, speaking minimally to avoid being detected by whatever is nearby. If they go down, they might not have a place to escape to, since the front door is jammed, after all. Upstairs, they could escape through another window or perhaps through the rooftop. ]
[ it works for him, soleum likes the idea of staying out of danger, if he can choose to run then he will. what remains here now is none of their concern, they shouldn't initiate fights when they don't have to. their search here is to grow their personal belongings, and while grapes doesn't know what exactly is a catch for caelus, he's sure the other will wander off when he does see it. ]
Alright.
[ his voice still shy of a whisper confirms the decision, and he begins walking towards the flight leading up. one foot lifts then steps on the first step, it creaks every so quietly, but nothing to be concerned of. the noise from before still goes like it did, no changes, and grapes walks cautiously as his eyes stare at the ground. it's best to watch where they're going to make sure they don't fall through the steps, and he's also wary of the walls covered in fungal matter.
he moves only so far, only continuing on until he can hear caelus' follow behind.
the stairs show no sign of caving in on themselves, but the railing seems faulty enough to fall over if touched. sunlight sinks into the apartment from the upper windows, pollen is visible in the air along with accumulated dust. ]
I don't hear anything upstairs so far...
[ with the weapon in hand, he's already staring at the surface to see if it reflects anything like a mirror or if the material its made out of doesn't work for that. ]
[ The combat knife is military-grade, so it's made from high-carbon steel. The sharpness is perfect for cutting down most things, including the Host plants all over the city. Caelus curiously watches as Grapes stares into the blade, wondering what he's thinking of, but he doesn't ask. Instead, he focuses on his own steps, making sure he won't accidentally trip as they progress upstairs.
Once there, Caelus sees the door heading to the rooftop. He notes its location and then stares at the other apartment units… So many doors. Which one to check first? It seems safe to talk here, but Caelus still maintains a low volume of his voice anyway. ]
Do you want to split up or stay together?
[ It's safer to stay together, but since there's so many doors… It's maybe ideal to split up to get through them faster. ]
Oh. If there are any locked doors, you can let me know. I'll lockpick them.
[ split up? that's the worst thing anyone can do in a horror story, it asks for someone to get killed or swap by a ghost, and there are spirits at play! he's met one through the murmur, but she seemed kind enough. are there elements here that could swap them if they aren't looking?
so far, everything seems to be plant-based and the worst that could happen is someone getting caught up in vines and needing to be cut down. he doesn't say anything yet as he's contemplating what could happen if he allows this individual to do anything dangerous.
if he gets hurt what would happen, he'd be at fault, wouldn't he? as much as soleum doesn't trust him, he seems to be listening so far, but what if? what if? they came in here for agent grapes anyway, he should have said no and laid in his car.
his grip on the knife is tighter. ]
Whatever room we go in, leave the door open. ...We can enter them diagonal from each other to keep watch.
[ if that's a plan he wants to do, and soleum doesn't think he has the heart to go through a window and leave him behind. initially yes, because he wouldn't have been in danger, but now? ... ]
That's a very practical and useful skill for a setting like this, that's great.
[ It's not the first time Caelus split up with his allies during similar situations, so he has no hesitation when he asks. Voice straightforward. He doesn't see anything to hesitate over, unless Grapes personally feels he can't defend himself alone (in which case, Caelus will stay with him to protect him). The traiblazer's behavior displays experience, with the way he's consistently calm, and the clear look in his eyes. Fear isn't present at all within him.
This is the same boy who survived underground not long ago, and many other horrific experiences beyond that. He split ways with his friends down there as well, to cover more ground. That's why he was by himself when he encountered Roe Deer. Despite exploring alone, he's never truly so, and he knows that fact. He can always count on people to be there for him in the end.
Even if Grapes runs from him, Caelus won't stop the man, exactly because of all these people he can count on. If anything, he'd be more worried about the older man running away all alone.
Since Grapes doesn't seem to protest with the idea of splitting up, Caelus nods to the older man's instructions. He doesn't feel the need to close the doors here anyway, unless a room is filled with undesirable air that could harm them. Otherwise, it's good to air out the room after years of being shut… ]
Okay. Let's start here.
[ Caelus approaches the door at the farthest east. He waits for Grapes to head to the opposite unit in front of this one before he opens his door slowly. He doesn't enter immediately, staring at the room's condition from the doorway before he makes his first steps inside, leaving the door open behind him.
He can be seen slowly walking in, looking around cautiously before he even attempts to touch anything. He's still visible when he's in the main living room, but disappears into the unit when he checks the other rooms of the apartment. ]
[ up the final steps, they've reached the next floor and the extra rooms are visible before them at different sides. considering the type of complex this is, it does seem annoying to have so many rooms like this available that splits off to too many different locations. it's perfect for a horror setting, though. making his way to the door across from caelus, he reaches for the doorknob to turn it slow and pushes it forward.
there's no resistance so he uses this as an opportunity to swing it open entirely, little light comes into the room because of what covers the windows. inside, it's nothing but a room filled with boxes and other things. opening one, agent grapes assess the contents inside which are picture frames, some cracked, and others in good condition aside from being dusty. he moves onto another box, he can see that along the seal there's a fungal trail that keeps the box shut, and so he pushes that to the side.
if some of these boxes are fine then it should be okay to look inside, he'll have to be mindful.
using his weapon, soleum cuts along the top of a few more to see, and if there's anything useful (rarely is). from what he finds, everything is either covered over, and nothing he thinks will find use. in another box with the words medicine written on the side, he finds various pill bottles of all kinds, but each one empty with nothing inside which makes has him realize it was to keep track of what this family probably had. unfortunate, even as he looks at what they were used for, he can tell by the dates that whoever was holding onto them must have been keeping up with the medical records for why they're even here. even the paperwork is stuffed to the side.
it's something he should have expected.
he finds nothing of substance here, and getting back to his feet, he leaves the room and his soft voice calls out. ]
[ Currently, Caelus is checking the master bedroom of the unit he's in. Since he doesn't want Grapes to worry, he responds, quietly but audible enough to be heard in the hallway— ]
Just a minute. I'm still looking.
[ He says as he's looking through the multiple cabinets around the large room. There are plenty of useful items for an Artificer here. Mundane objects that most people wouldn't care about, but their value is different for someone who sees even actual trash as riches. However, since that's not the purpose of today's search, he ignores every irrelevant item and focuses on trying to search for something for Grapes to use.
There has to be at least one thing here somewhere. Unfortunately, when he finally finds where the blankets are kept, they're all torn apart. Either by mold or by Host animals. He gives up on blankets and looks for the next alternatives. More shuffling around. A few minutes pass.
Eventually, Caelus leaves that unit and returns to Grapes. He holds up… a really unfashionable grandma's sweater. It looks ugly! But hey, it's intact!! And it's good enough to keep warm! ]
[ what caelus comes out with is realistic, it's unfashionable because it has little items hanging off in yarn. one of those classic christmas sweaters, but not entirely holiday but someone's grandmother was feeling very excitable about the concept of knitting it. he smiles sheepishly, then lifts his hands to deny the offer. ]
Thank you... really, I wouldn't have found it without you.
[ true, but he doesn't want it at all, especially when he looks it over again, his tastes aren't so profound to look like this. this seems more up caelus' alley than his own, and not to seem ungrateful, he does walk over with a tilt of his head to show appreciation. it's not like it won't work, but between a shirt and a blanket, he finds that the blanket allows for him to keep what he already has on. if he tears or rips anything, it'd be what's on him and if something happens to the sweater than he loses out on warmth.
a blanket has more to offer. ]
But... I'm determined now to find that blanket. [ taking the sweater so that he can fold it into his arms, ] Did you find anything for yourself?
[ Ah. Caelus sees that! Grapes is being too polite to say it, but Caelus can tell that the older man doesn't want to wear it at all. That's unexpected, considering resources are hard to come by in this place. The trailblazer expected the man not to be picky. At the same time, he supposes he gets it. The sweater's not attractive at all! It's probably going to embarrass most people to be seen in this thing!
Caelus is about to put it away, but then Grapes decides to accept it either way. The trailblazer smiles shortly after. ]
There are still other units here. Let's check more of them.
[ At least one of these apartments has to have a blanket, right?? Come on now. How mean could Sleep be? … Actually, super mean and Caelus knows it. The possibility of all the blankets here being torn beyond repair is very possible. Maybe Sleep is forcing Grapes to wear that sweater! (Start praying to win that RNG, Grapes.) ]
I did, but I didn't want to encumber myself with it for now. I want to find a blanket for you first.
[ he would rather just set it down somewhere and act like he forgot to pick it up, that outcome becomes more appealing as they move forward. with it against his chest, and the weapon tightly in his hand, he follows right behind caelus. ]
You don't have to do that.
[ he speaks up, reassuring the other about what their goals and focus should be. caelus needs those items to survive, and what does agent grapes need? a simple blanket. their reasons for coming here were the same, but when there are visible benefits, why not take it? ]
I can look for a blanket while you get what's important for you...
[ there's part of him that would feel bad if he allowed caelus to leave emptyhanded. ]
Ahaha… It's all right, really. They're not important, just crafting materials that I want. I can always come back for them later, now that I know where they are.
[ Unless they're a fellow Artificer or engineer, Caelus can't see anyone else wanting those things, so it's not like anyone will take them. Well, even if they did take them, he doesn't really mind. There are still endless other places to loot in this gigantic abandoned city.
Originally, Caelus came around this area to find materials. He only got sidetracked after meeting Grapes, but he likes this much better. He always enjoys the company of people. Though, to reassure Grapes, Caelus decides to say this— ]
It's okay. I'm in a rather good position because I've been here for almost half a year. I have a nice place to stay and plenty of stockpiled supplies, so it's not like I'm in desperate need of anything right now. My friends and I diligently hunt for supplies on a nearly daily basis, so we've accumulated quite a collection.
[ Since Grapes is following Caelus around now, they both enter the next apartment unit together. This one… isn't so lucky with its condition. The ceiling caved in, so a large portion of the living room is inaccessible. They'll have to check the other rooms of this unit instead.
Caelus feels disappointed to see potentially useful items already in pieces. ]
[ he speaks aloud, a shake in his voice as he looks to caelus— as roe deer, he said he would get them out, and as agent grapes that still holds true. the reason why it does is because of the profession that comes with this character he plays. ]
As soon as we're able to get in contact with other agents, maybe... the escape will be easier. I know there are people who are worried that want you home.
[ he understands now why agent choi asked soleum to request help then they were in cathedral, and now soleum feels the same way. if there was someone who appeared then went back, wouldn't they be able to explain what's going on, find something in relation to this disaster and get them out.
at this point, kim soleum wouldn't mind if director ho was the one to get them out.
he looks at the mutilated room, the ceiling that's caved it in, and various items that he sees as trash now and not as useful due to his own desires until he notices a pen in the corner. the creaky floor holds his weight, and kneeling down to stick his hand in the room will he grab it. it's not a big haul, but it's useful, the pen is something he puts away in his pocket. ]
Not completely a waste. Thank you.
[ it's a pen, but it's more than what he had at the start. stepping away from the entrance so he can close the door, he points to another door adjacent to the one they're at. the door has a few cracks in it from where fungi have broke through the wood, and while that doesn't bode well from what's inside... they're not, or maybe caelus is and agent grapes isn't, allowed to pass up on what could be inside. ]
[ That is, the Astral Express and many others are likely worried sick about him by now, assuming there is no time difference between the relevant places. Since they're unable to do anything for now, this is what he can hope for at the very least. ]
I'm hoping there's a major time difference between this place and my universe, though. I really don't want them to worry, considering I don't know how much longer we'll all be stuck here…
[ Some risks are unavoidable in a place like this. Caelus isn't going to avoid every sign of danger, even though it's safest that way. However, if they always play it safe, they'll also keep missing important opportunities. That's why the trailblazer easily agrees. If Grapes is fine with it, then so is he. He'll only reconsider if his company is averse to it. ]
Hehe, and I was only referring to the ones I won't be able to recycle. I can still make use of certain materials in here. But that's for another day, as I said. Meanwhile, I'm glad you found something nice.
[ He makes casual chat as they proceed, since silence will only make the moment more tense. He'll only quiet down if it's necessary. When they reach the fungi-leaded door, he lowers his knees a little so he can try peeking through one of the larger cracks. There's no suspicious scent coming out of the room, at least, so it's hopefully fine to enter. ]
It doesn't look jammed. Maybe we can still open this door.
[ that shaky voice of his is to give off a more gentler approach than one that would appear like he's correcting him. the idea of a major time gap would be terrifying, imagine all the things that would have changed if this world moves slower and theirs faster? he understands caelus wants this world to be faster and their worlds slower, but that's rarely ever the case when they're forcibly ripped against their will.
it would have to be a kinder entity for that, and with sleep still having control, who knows. ]
Let's hope for no movement at all, that we go right back to where we were before all this happened...
[ when they finally leave, what will be waiting for them out there, who will know them? will they still be recognizable or... he can only hope, but he doesn't let his worries diminish his beliefs either. his hand tightens around the dagger as he thinks about what's at stake. his head raises up like an alert deer in vibrant white headlights at caelus' comment.
did he find something nice? the pen? sure, the pen, it's something, and the dagger is too. two things he seemingly doesn't want to part with now that he has them. ]
Y-yeah thanks... do you think I'll find a bike next?
[ it's only a joke as they finally reach the door, and soleum nods at the other's assessment. perfect. ]
Okay. On three, do you want to count for us?
[ no matter how horrible this place is, and even if he finds these characters by him... not real, that doesn't mean he won't help them get out at least. they're all in the same situation. ]
It happened to me before already. I've been trapped by a higher being like this before.
[ Since Grapes mentions about personal experience, Caelus shares his own. And this is the reason why he's been hoping for it to be the case again. ]
I was stuck on a certain planet for years because of it, all without outside contact, because that same entity had blocked my means of communication. When I eventually did regain a means to, I found out that barely any time passed for them, even though it's been years for me.
In addition, I have a friend from my universe who arrived here earlier than I did. Our timelines didn't match when we spoke of it, so at least in the case of my universe, something is already different.
[ Besides, it's not like Sleep created this world. She just hijacked it, deciding to make it her own, and threw everyone else in the fire with her destructive wishes. Anyway, after laughing at Grape's attempt at humor (that was cute), Caelus focuses, so he stops talking for now. Since they're about to open a potentially dangerous door, he puts his guard up and is ready to take action if anything leaps out at them. ]
Mm… All right.
[ Then, he starts counting. One. Two. And by three, the two of them step forward at the same time, pushing the door open together. ]
no subject
That's how he's lived until now, and he's still going strong. Aiding and protecting others aside, he's still on a constant journey for himself as well, and he won't allow himself to fall here. He's a Nameless, a Trailblazer, and there is still so much that he has to go through before he can find the answers he's looking for.
no subject
You...
Ready?
no subject
I'm pretty strong, so I'll pull you in!
no subject
once he's pulled up, agent grapes comes through the window right after him, and the wet underside of his shoes hit against the floor. a small squeak of them, he finally releases caelus' hand to bring the same one to his own mouth, only to block out spores.
how many times has a situation like this made itself onto the wiki? a small group of people normally going into a tainted house or apartment for resources, and most if not everything is already damaged by whatever caused destruction of the world. he looks at the variety of colors on the wall, how it's eaten away at the curtains on the floor, and the stains on the floor that shows what has dry rotted.
agent grapes takes one step forward as he squats down, a hand press against the floor and he can feel the lack of stability. ]
The lighter areas... we should be careful, we don't want to fall through.
[ standing up properly (with the hunch of his shoulders), agent grapes looks around the room seeing that they've wandered into what appears to be a nursery room. a cradle barely holding on, the wind-up toy of planets has growth over them that's dangled into vines with a flower at the end. pictures covered in dust along with a small couch.
it's at this, agent grapes can only frown slightly.
on a table nearby, there seems to be a picture book with a name written on the cover: "Our Princess' Second Birthday!"
... ]
no subject
no subject
no subject
I can never get enough of materials to use.
no subject
no subject
no subject
Up or down...?
[ the interior of this place is pretty weird. ]
no subject
Upon hearing those strange sounds, though, Caelus entirely halts his feet. Looking at Grape's expression, it seems the man prefers to avoid a fight if they can. The trailblazer agrees. There's no need to exert any risk if it's not needed. ]
Up…
[ He lowers his own voice, speaking minimally to avoid being detected by whatever is nearby. If they go down, they might not have a place to escape to, since the front door is jammed, after all. Upstairs, they could escape through another window or perhaps through the rooftop. ]
no subject
no subject
Once there, Caelus sees the door heading to the rooftop. He notes its location and then stares at the other apartment units… So many doors. Which one to check first? It seems safe to talk here, but Caelus still maintains a low volume of his voice anyway. ]
Do you want to split up or stay together?
[ It's safer to stay together, but since there's so many doors… It's maybe ideal to split up to get through them faster. ]
Oh. If there are any locked doors, you can let me know. I'll lockpick them.
no subject
so far, everything seems to be plant-based and the worst that could happen is someone getting caught up in vines and needing to be cut down. he doesn't say anything yet as he's contemplating what could happen if he allows this individual to do anything dangerous.
if he gets hurt what would happen, he'd be at fault, wouldn't he? as much as soleum doesn't trust him, he seems to be listening so far, but what if? what if? they came in here for agent grapes anyway, he should have said no and laid in his car.
his grip on the knife is tighter. ]
Whatever room we go in, leave the door open. ...We can enter them diagonal from each other to keep watch.
[ if that's a plan he wants to do, and soleum doesn't think he has the heart to go through a window and leave him behind. initially yes, because he wouldn't have been in danger, but now? ... ]
That's a very practical and useful skill for a setting like this, that's great.
no subject
rolled for medicine luck: 3
there's no resistance so he uses this as an opportunity to swing it open entirely, little light comes into the room because of what covers the windows. inside, it's nothing but a room filled with boxes and other things. opening one, agent grapes assess the contents inside which are picture frames, some cracked, and others in good condition aside from being dusty. he moves onto another box, he can see that along the seal there's a fungal trail that keeps the box shut, and so he pushes that to the side.
if some of these boxes are fine then it should be okay to look inside, he'll have to be mindful.
using his weapon, soleum cuts along the top of a few more to see, and if there's anything useful (rarely is). from what he finds, everything is either covered over, and nothing he thinks will find use. in another box with the words medicine written on the side, he finds various pill bottles of all kinds, but each one empty with nothing inside which makes has him realize it was to keep track of what this family probably had. unfortunate, even as he looks at what they were used for, he can tell by the dates that whoever was holding onto them must have been keeping up with the medical records for why they're even here. even the paperwork is stuffed to the side.
it's something he should have expected.
he finds nothing of substance here, and getting back to his feet, he leaves the room and his soft voice calls out. ]
Um... anything in your room?
no subject
Here you are, Mr. Grapes.
no subject
[ taking the sweater so that he can fold it into his arms, ] Did you find anything for yourself?
no subject
I want to find a blanket for you first.
no subject
You don't have to do that.
[ he speaks up, reassuring the other about what their goals and focus should be. caelus needs those items to survive, and what does agent grapes need? a simple blanket. their reasons for coming here were the same, but when there are visible benefits, why not take it? ]
I can look for a blanket while you get what's important for you...
[ there's part of him that would feel bad if he allowed caelus to leave emptyhanded. ]
Really, I'm fine so far.
no subject
Oh… what a waste.
no subject
Let's try that one.
no subject
Maybe we can still open this door.
no subject
no subject
